špička
Dortík známý každému Čechovi a (dle mého) i zajímavý překladatelský oříšek. Jak byste přeložili do angličtiny?
Špička /SH-PITCH-ka/ is a Czech pattiserie. There’s a circle of sponge on the bottom. The outside forms a thin crust of chocolate beneath which lies thick cacao cream, the function of which is to surround the liquid, eggnog center and prevent it from erupting from this uniquely shaped volcano.
Now, the literal translation of the name might be „the pinnacle“ or perhaps „the peak“, but I invite you to look carefully at the picture and ask yourselves: are these words enough to encompass all that a špička stands for? Shouldn’t we be able to find a more fitting word?
